 CERTIFICATION

Certification is the road to Success

She received the call that she PASSED!

The Certified Professional Secretary designation can provide the advantage you need to advance in your career. Professional certification shows employers, clients and associates that you are committed as a professional. The CPS exam is given twice a year: November and May.

Our chapter wants to assist you as you prepare for the exam. If you would like to participate in a study group, borrow chapter resources as you prepare, or need any other assistance, please contact
Deborah L. Vardell CPS CAP .

Also, for those who already have their CPS certification, there is the certification test called Certified Administrative Professional (CAP). You can find more information and sample questions at the International web site. If you are interested in participating in a study group, please contact Deb.

**Sample EXAM questions are on the International
 web site under certification

A member has asked: "What do those who have not recertified for their CPS do if it is more than five years? Can you take the CAP test if the CPS designation was not recertified?

Vicki Twombly, Certification Specialist, IAAP, responds: "Yes, they can either take Part 4 and if they pass that in May (or Nov) this would recertify them for 5 more years. Or they can gather 90 points from the last 5 years and recertify with those."

(See the Recertification Brochure link above.)

News from the IAAP Annual Report
regarding college credit equivalency

The American Council on Education (ACE) provides college credit equivalency recommendations for achieving the CPS and CAP recertification. ACE recommends 32 semester hours for the three-part CPS exam and 41 semester hours for the four-part CAP exam. It is up to each educational institution to determine how much credit will actually be awarded.

The ACE will not review the exam for credit under the new blueprint until it has been tested at least three times. The Certification Department and Institute for Certification will work with ACE to update the academic credit recommendation process beginning in 2006. In the meantime, those certifying under the new blueprint can provide their school with the exam outline and current ACE recommendation to assist the school in determining if credit can be awarded. The Certification Department staff is available to answer questions posed by an academic institution.

Please email Tammy Hardy Durham if you are available to speak to a business class or a potential new IAAP organization. This will help us in numerous ways--in starting the new organization, plus it will help us on the application for the Avery Dennison award as this can be counted towards having a Speakers' Bureau.
